16-bit vs 14-bit capture for artwork

Bit depth is the least visible capture spec and one of the most consequential — not for how the file looks on delivery, but for what survives everything you do to it afterwards.

What the numbers actually count

Bit depth is how many distinct tonal steps are recorded per colour channel. 14-bit capture, typical of professional DSLR and mirrorless cameras, records 16,384 steps per channel. 16-bit records 65,536.

Because red, green and blue each get that range, the combinations multiply out: roughly 4.4 trillion possible colours at 14-bit against 281.5 trillion at 16-bit. That is 64 times more colour information, or about 277 trillion additional combinations.

Those numbers are almost meaninglessly large, and quoting them alone is a marketing move rather than an explanation. What matters is where the extra steps get spent.

Where you actually see the difference

Not in a straight, unedited print of a well-exposed capture — at that point both files look much the same, and anyone claiming otherwise is overselling. The difference appears in three specific places.

Gradients. A soft wash of sky, a glaze, a colour field: these are exactly where a limited number of tonal steps becomes visible as banding, because the eye is very sensitive to abrupt transitions in smooth areas. More steps means the transition stays smooth.

Shadow detail. Tonal steps are not distributed evenly across the exposure range — the darkest stops get the fewest. Lifting shadows on a 14-bit file stretches a smaller number of values across a wider tonal range, and the gaps show as noise and posterisation.

Editing latitude. Every correction — white balance, curve, saturation — redistributes tonal values. Starting with more of them means more survives the work, which matters most for a master file that will be corrected once and printed from for years.

Delivery bit depth is a separate question

Capturing at 16 bits and delivering an 8-bit JPEG throws the advantage away at the last step. An archival master should stay 16-bit — a TIFF, typically — with 8-bit derivatives generated from it for web, submissions, and previews.

Keep the master. Derivatives can always be regenerated from it; it cannot be reconstructed from them.

When it does not matter

For a listing photograph, a social post, or a record shot for your own files, bit depth is not the thing to spend money on. Even light and honest colour matter far more.

It matters when the file is a master: something that will be colour-corrected, printed at size, published, or kept as the archival record of a piece you no longer own.
